Environmental Impact Statement

The New Whatcom Redevelopment (DEIS) was released on January 9, 2008 by the SEPA Responsible Official for the Port of Bellingham and the public comment period ended on March 10, 2008. The EIS is being designed to test the impacts of a change in zoning and land use in the waterfront area from industrial to a mix of business, commercial, residential and light industrial uses to support the community's vision. The change would also allow new opportunities for public parks and access to restored marine shorelines. During the public comment period, the Port held two public hearings and received dozens of written comments through the mail and email.

Final EIS Scoping Document

In July 2007, a final EIS scoping document was issued outlining the waterfront redevelopment proposal and elements of the environment, such as transportation, land uses, view corridors and other issues that should be studied to determine the potential impacts of the proposal. In addition, a summary of oral and written comments provided by private citizens, public agencies, and tribes on the draft scoping document and the response to these comments is also available.
