Waterfront Advisory Group Meets Wednesday Public Encouraged to Attend
[Bellingham, Wash.] At noon Wednesday (July 13), the new Waterfront Advisory Group will be meeting at the Port conference room at 921 Cornwall Avenue to discuss waterfront redevelopment planning. The entrance for this Port Field Office is in the rear of the building, which is ADA accessible. Free on-street parking is available. At this meeting the group will elect its chair and vice chair and will get an update on the selection of consultants to assist with the urban design, infrastructure and public access planning elements of the New Whatcom master plan. The Port and City received 45 responses to their request for qualifications and are working together to determine the best firms for this project. Finalist firms were interviewed last week. The Waterfront Advisory Group also will review the proposed neighborhood plan amendments for the Central Business District and the South Hill Neighborhood. Both of those neighborhoods include portions of the Georgia Pacific site, which currently is zoned heavy industrial. The Waterfront Futures Group recommended the Georgia Pacific site be redeveloped for mixed use, residential and commercial uses, which will require a zoning change. The 10-member committee was appointed by the City and the Port to ensure public awareness and participation in waterfront planning and to work with the City and Port to implement the recommendations of the Waterfront Futures Group. The group will be involved in baywide planning and development discussions, including those relating to the Georgia Pacific site. For additional information about the Waterfront Advisory Group, contact Greg Aucutt at the City, 360-676-6982, or Sylvia Goodwin at the Port at 360-676-2500, . Information on the Waterfront Advisory Group is on the City of Bellingham website at www.cob.org/pcd/planning/growth/waterfront-advisory-group.htm. Information about upcoming meetings, meeting minutes and waterfront planning efforts will be added as this site expands.
