The new downtown marina is expected to be ready for boats within the next ten years. The marina site is currently a fenced-off contaminated industrial lagoon that was used by
Georgia-Pacific for treatment of pulp and tissue mill wastewater.
Process
Before it can be developed into a marina, the Port of Bellingham will:
- Drain the water
- Remove all the contaminated sludges
- Prepare the lagoon for marina construction
The lagoon is part of the state-listed
Whatcom waterway cleanup site. The
Department of Ecology will oversee cleanup of the site.
