Public Invited to Attend Coast Salish Story Pole Dedication at Bellingham International Airport

BELLINGHAM, WA (Tuesday, February 24, 2016) – The public is invited to a dedication ceremony to celebrate the first permanent public art installation at Bellingham International Airport (BLI), a Coast Salish story pole. The event will take place at 1pm on Friday, March 11, in the airport’s public arrivals lobby. Free parking is available for attendees of the ceremony. Park in the main airport terminal lot at 4255 Mitchell Way, Bellingham, and bring your parking stub to the event for validation.

“The Port has been interested in displaying permanent public art at the airport terminal since completing the $38.6 million expansion of BLI in 2014” said Port Executive Director Rob Fix. “This story pole will be a tremendous asset for our community as it celebrates the Coast Salish heritage of our region and highlights the importance of the Pacific Northwest’s iconic salmon. We were lucky to find a renowned Lummi artist to partner with on this project.”

Mr. Solomon began working on It’s Mine: Coast Salish Story Pole, about eight years ago. Completion of the cedar story pole involved collaboration between the artist, Port of Bellingham, Lummi Nation and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), with support from numerous individuals and other organizations. NSEA, dedicated to restoring local wild salmon runs, implemented community events and fundraising efforts to support the creation of the story pole as part of its salmon education programming.

“It’s Mine expresses my personal view and experience of why we’re having such a tough time putting salmon on our tables,” said Lummi artist Felix Solomon. “The whole message of this sculpture speaks to the cultural and spiritual issues that impact us as Natives, but also the impact on everyone else and our environment.”
