Former Port Commissioner Doug Smith Wins State Port Award

The Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) selected former Port of Bellingham Commissioner Douglas “Doug” G. Smith for its Outstanding Service to the Industry Award earlier this month.

The award was given to Smith at the Ports Association’s Annual Meeting in Bellevue and was presented by current Port Commissioner and WPPA President Scott Walker.

Walker noted Smith’s 16 years of service on the Port of Bellingham’s Board of Commissioners and spoke about Smith’s leadership role as the port diversified its assets, launched the Bellingham Waterfront redevelopment and expanded the Bellingham Airport. He also was very involved in decisions regarding expansion and improvements to the Squalicum and Blaine Marinas.

Smith was a strong proponent for job creation and worker training and supported port partnerships with the local university and colleges. In recognition of his accomplishments, the port named its conference room at the Technology Development Center in his honor.

Smith has continued as an advocate for the Port of Bellingham since leaving the Commission in 2010, bringing diverse people together and educating them about the port.

The Washington Public Ports Association was formed by the Legislature in 1961. WPPA promotes the interests of the port community through effective government relations, ongoing education, and strong advocacy programs. There are 75 port districts located in our state, and because of the work they do, Washington's products share a single market: the world.
