Environmental Programs

The Port of Bellingham is committed to serving as an environmental leader in Whatcom County. Over the years, we have made great strides in cleaning up historic industrial contamination in Bellingham Bay and Blaine Harbor, restoring salmon habitats, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing waste across Port operations. The Port’s environmental programs support numerous initiatives, including: 

• Ongoing cleanup of historic industrial contamination

• Ongoing Habitat Restoration and wetland mitigation projects
• Port-wide Stormwater Management 
• Climate change resilience planning and projects
• Planning for energy resiliency, including electrification including (EV charging stations)
• Renewable energy development
• Energy Efficiency programs at all Port owned buildings, including PSE's CSEM program
• Continuous improvement of numerous programs with help from certifications like Green Marine and Envirostars. 
• Providing internal and tenant support and outreach through our Environmental Compliance Assessment Program (ECAP)
• Adoption of diverse emerging technologies and environmental best practices in Port operations
• Application of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards where feasible 
• Supporting appropriate disposal of customer waste and partnering with Sustainable Connections to implement Towards Zero Waste at specific sites
• Providing Green Boating information to moorage tenants
• Encouraging staff to participate in Smart Trips
