The Port is pleased to announce the grand opening of a new mountain bike park on Bellingham’s downtown waterfront.
The mountain bike park is open to the public and can be accessed from Granary Avenue or Laurel Street. There will be a grand opening celebration on September 28th from 2-6 pm with pump track races, bike demos, a beer garden, food trucks and a DJ.
The Port partnered with Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition to develop a large pump track and single track sidewalk on an uneven gravel surface in the middle of the downtown waterfront and hired local contractor Shire Built, a subsidiary of Oceanside Construction, to build the facility. Shire Built has worked on several well-known local mountain bike projects including Mohawk Trail on Galbraith, the Civic Field dirt jumps and the Burlington Indoor Bike Park.
he Port built the mountain bike park to improve public access to the water and encourage the community to use the downtown waterfront as it gradually develops over time.
The mountain bike park is located in an area which will eventually be developed into a large City park extending through the middle of the downtown waterfront. The timeline for building this permanent waterfront park has not been established and will depend on the pace of development, but will likely be at least 10 years.
